THE SATURDAY JUKEBOX
The Saturday Jukebox is a weekly look at the music of that particular
week in the music history of the 1940's, 1950's and early 1960's. On
odd occasion it'll feature a song from a period earlier than that,
perhaps the 1920's or 1930's if it's relevant to the show. It deals
with what was recorded or what charted during that particular week,
or an event pertaining to the music or an artist. It begins in the
late 50's/early 60's and works it's way back down to 1950. John has
an amazing knowledge of the music and tends to drop in interesting
facts or anecdotes about the tracks he plays as he goes along.
The show is broadcast on Radio Today in Johannesburg and is also broadcast
on a station in the UK, one in Australia and a some internet stations.
It has it's own website which has a good following of listeners as well.
He produces and records the show from home, then uploaded to the various
broadcasters and the websites, but it's done in a way that he welcomes
calls and email and while the show is airing on Radio Today listeners
call in and chat to him at his home. From time to time John will do some
trivia to which listeners call him trying to guess the answers.
The show is now in it's fifteenth year.
JOHN GREGG
John has one of the biggest private collections of music in South Africa.
He began his career in radio producing Lance James' Keep It Country
when Radio Today began. When Lance was away he'd ask John to step in
and do the show for him. He then encouraged John to do more radio work,
a show of his own. That, along with listener response was so encouraging
that he decided to take Lance's advice and created the Saturday Jukebox.
This then led to him doing a Saturday morning breakfast show that ran
for 21/2 hours, a 'music magazine' show which included news and sports
updates, items from newspapers, competitions, comedy and requests.
He also did a country show 'Country Roads' and a weekly afternoon music
show for a number of years.
